Double bill!
Ned Rothenberg with Matt Maneri (Violin/Viola) & Tom Abbs (Bass)
AND
Peter Apfelbaum & Dean Bowman
Friday, March 5 - 8pm

At Possible Fireworks, audiences get to see sparks fly when a renowned musician takes the stage with a dream band of their making, consisting of musicians they've never played with before. This month, a special double bill: Ned Rothenberg splits the bill with Peter Apfelbaum (on sax, piano and percussion) and vocalist Dean Bowman, whose performance was snowed out in December. Ned Rothenberg composes and performs on various saxophones, clarinets, flutes, and the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute. He leads the multi-metric funk ensemble, Double Band, and the chamber jazz group, Power Lines, and was a founding member of the long-running new music cooperative, New Winds. His music is inventive, intense and rhapsodic; employing horns in melodic ear-opening east-west combinations and as engines for rhythm and harmony.

At age 17, multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum founded a 17-piece band, Hieroglyphics Ensemble, that incorporated the polyrhythmic mix of African and Western elements now widely acknowledged as having presaged "world beat." He teams up with Dean Bowman, who was hailed by Sue Mingus as "the most important jazz vocalist since Bobby McFerrin." Bowman has become a most accomplished and eclectic vocalist, transcending the genres of jazz, avant garde, gospel, and hard rock. Curated by Janine Nichols.
