THE GREAT WHITE HOPE

Last summer this Brooklyn-based company set the theatre world buzzing with its amazing adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, staged on the front porches of a tree-lined Ditmas Park street. Now BNW takes on Howard Sackler's 1969 Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Great White Hope in a unique concert production at the Bandshell. Set at the turn of the century, the play tells the heartbreaking story of African-American heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. BNW's groundbreaking production features a cast of Brooklyn-based actors accompanied by live music from noted ragtime piano virtuoso Roy Eaton and historic photographic images courtesy of Culver Pictures, Inc.

A one-of-a-kind night of live music and film as BILL FRISELL, "widely considered one of the world's most innovative and unpredictable jazz guitarists and composers," (Seattle Times) performs original scores to an astonishing program of shorts: BUSTER KEATON's High Sign and One Week; a selection of surrealist animations by maverick cartoonist JIM WOODRING; and the artist BILL MORRISON's hallucinogenic reimagining of the eerie 1926 Boris Karloff gem The Mesmerist. Come early for vintage Hawaiian tunes (steel guitar, ukuleles, the works) delivered with a touch of goth attitude by the MOONLIGHTERS.

This year's celebration of African music, food, and culture is cross-continental affair that will keep you dancing all day headlined by the Congolese rumba supergroup KÉKÉLÉ. The mysterious masked Nigerian LÁGBÁJÁ, heir apparent to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat throne, leads the rest of the lineup, which includes Madagascar-born and Gabon-raised R&B singer RAZIA, pan-African hip-hop with the AFRICAN UNDERGROUND ALLSTARS featuring CHOSAN of Sierra Leone, DOLA of Tanzania, and other special guests, and MARTINO ATANGANA & AFRICAN BLUE NOTE, whose fusion of funk, jazz and an array of West African styles throws a hint of NYC into the mix.
