Rotunda Gallery presents a magical night of readings featuring
Arthur Bradford, Michael J. Ewing and Shelley Jackson

The Rotunda Gallery presents a free evening of readings on December 12, 2003 at 7:00 pm, in conjunction with the exhibition Explaining Magic. Admission is free, but reservations are required: call 718-875-4047 x11. Organizer Nelly Reifler works her magic with the latest in her ongoing reading series at Rotunda, gathering a provocative group of readers for an entertaining and stimulating evening. The series draws standing-room-only crowds and was recently featured in Time Out New York. This reading will explore the themes of Explaining Magic, a group exhibition of artists who evoke the audience's creative capacity to wonder by transforming the mundane into the extraordinary.

Shelley Jackson is the author of The Melancholy of Anatomy, published by Anchor in 2002, and the acclaimed hypertext novel Patchwork Girl. She has written and illustrated several children's books and her stories have appeared in journals and anthologies including The Paris Review, Grand Street, Kenyon Review, Conjunctions and Fence. Her current project, Skin, is a short story being tattooed one word at a time on the skin of volunteers, beginning with her own. With over a thousand participants already, the work has received national attention in the press, from The Village Voice to Newsweek. Jackson will read selections from her own work.

Michael J. Ewing is an actor and the founding artistic director of Rabid Rascal Productions; his most recent appearance was in their production, The Writer's Mind, a hit at the 2003 New York International Fringe Festival. He has performed in numerous regional productions and is the founding co-editor of the literary website parenthetical note. Ewing will read from the works of Jorge Luis Borge and Italo Calvino.

Arthur Bradford's first book of stories, Dogwalker, was published by Knopf in 2001, and is now available in Vintage paperback. The recipient of an O. Henry Award, his stories have appeared in Esquire, Zoetrope, Bomb and McSweeney's. He is also the director of the documentary film How's Your News? which was broadcast on HBO/Cinemax in 2002. Bradford will read selections from his own work.

Event organizer Nelly Reifler is an award-winning author and a curator; her first collection of stories, See Through, was published by Simon and Schuster in September of 2003. She is co-editor with Paul Auster of the anthology I Thought My Father was God, and her work has appeared in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies.

The ROTUNDA GALLERY, housed in an award-winning space designed by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson, showcases the work of Brooklyn artists. The ROTUNDA GALLERY’s educational programs reach 6,000 students each year with gallery visits and in-school art making projects. Janet Riker is the Gallery Director; Meridith McNeal is Associate Director. The ROTUNDA GALLERY is a program of the not-for-profit BRIC/Brooklyn Information & Culture, Inc.

Located in Brooklyn Heights, just over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the Gallery is also easily accessible by public transportation. It is a short walk from the 2,3; 4,5; M; N or R trains at the Court Street/Borough Hall station; or the A, C trains at High Street.
