KidsArt arrives at Rotunda Gallery in a burst of color, shape, imagination and ideas!

The Rotunda Gallery presents the annual KidsArt exhibition, a celebration of art created by New York City students participating in the Gallery's education programs during the 2003-2004 school year. A unique chance to see hundreds of artworks by kids from across Brooklyn, KidsArt will be on view from June 1 to June 19, 2004. On Thursday, June 10, the exhibition is part of KidsDay, a celebration full of exciting free events for the whole family: art-making workshops, exhibition tours and special events at cultural institutions all over the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. KidsArt and KidsDay are sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings and the Verizon Foundation.

Curated by Meridith McNeal, Rotunda's Acting Director/Director of Education, KidsArt showcases outstanding, diverse projects by kids of all ages: Sixth Graders from P.S. 259 in Ft. Hamilton have created a twenty-foot accordion book of watercolors on NY subway maps, based on Hiroshige's classic 100 Famous Views of Edo, called "100 Views of Brooklyn." At P.S. 167 in Crown Heights, students have glazed self-portraits onto dozens of ceramic tiles to be combined in one big installation, while elementary school students at P.S. 119 in Flatbush have created life-sized, articulated figures of famous icons of African-American history. Other projects range from paintings based on the style of Jasper Johns and M.C. Escher, to large drawings of childrens' family trees, to sculptures, installations and murals focusing on math, science and even conflict resolution.

The KidsDay event is co-presented by the Rotunda Gallery, the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Transit Museum and the Brooklyn Historical Society. The all-day festivities include a variety of art-making workshops in the Gallery on the theme "All About Recycling!" for artists of all ages, and other free events around Brooklyn Heights, ending with a cookies and juice reception, courtesy of Morgan Stanley, at 3:00 PM in the Gallery. The reception will include a crown contest; anybody wearing a hand-made crown can compete for great prizes! Reservations are required for many of the KidsDay programs, and a schedule of events is available by calling 718-875-4047 ext. 16.

The Rotunda Gallery promotes the work of Brooklyn artists. It is a project of the not-for-profit BRIC/Brooklyn Information & Culture, Inc. Meridith McNeal is Acting Director and Director of Education, Hawley Hussey is Education Coordinator. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon-5:00 pm, and Saturday, 11-4:00 pm. Admission is FREE. For information: 718-875-4047 or www.briconline.org/rotunda.

Located in Brooklyn Heights, just over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the Gallery is also easily accessible by public transportation. It is a short walk from the 2,3; 4,5; M; N or R trains at the Court Street/Borough Hall station; or the A, C trains at High Street.
