Join John Ventimiglia, Jane Avrich, Langhorne Slim and Jen Bervin for an exhilarating evening of readings and performance at the Rotunda Gallery

The Rotunda Gallery presents a free evening of readings and performance on Saturday, May 8, 2003 at 7:00 pm. Admission is free, but reservations are required: call 718-875-4047 x11. The latest in an ongoing series organized by Nelly Reifler, the event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Reduce/Reuse/Reexamine. This series continues to build its reputation as a place to experience unique and provocative performances, consistently drawing standing-room-only crowds; the most recent event in the series was a "Don't Miss" Pick in Time Out New York and The Village Voice. Each performer will explore the themes of Rotunda's Reduce/Reuse/Reexamine exhibition, which brings together artists who employ recycled materials or explore the urban environment and society's consumption of resources as subject matter.

Jane Avrich's stories have appeared in Paris Review, Ploughshares, Story and other journals and have been nominated for The Best American Short Stories. Her debut story collection, The Winter Without Milk, was published by Mariner Books in 2003. She will read her story Trash Traders.

Jen Bervin is an artist and poet whose new book of poetry, Nets, was published by Ugly Duckling Presse in March of 2004. Bervin's new poems are created by evocatively isolating words from sonnets by Shakespeare; she'll perform this work accompanied by slides visualizing the creative process.

Langhorne Slim's frequent live performances have generated a loyal following throughout New York City, and he has toured widely with the Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players. Slim's style of blues-folk-rock music is showcased on his debut EP Electric Love Letter on the Narnack Records label. Following the "recycling" theme, he will perform several cover songs.

John Ventimiglia is best known as the character Artie Bucco on HBO's hit series "The Sopranos"; his acting career spans over a decade and features film credits as varied as Jesus' Son; Niagara, Niagara; Trees Lounge and Girls Town. He will read passages from Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein.

Event organizer Nelly Reifler is an award-winning author and a curator; her first collection of stories, See Through, was published by Simon and Schuster in September of 2003. She is co-editor with Paul Auster of the anthology I Thought My Father was God, and her work has appeared in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies.

Wave Hill's Glyndor Gallery presents exhibitions that explore the complex relationship between people and nature. Their Reduce/Reuse/Reexamine exhibition features another exciting group of artists exploring similar themes. Curated by Gallery Director Jennifer MacGregor, it opens March 6 and will be on view through May 31. For more information, visit www.wavehill.org.

The ROTUNDA GALLERY, housed in an award-winning space designed by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson, showcases the work of Brooklyn artists. The ROTUNDA GALLERY’s educational programs reach 6,000 students each year with gallery visits and in-school art making projects. Janet Riker is the Gallery Director; Meridith McNeal is Associate Director. The ROTUNDA GALLERY is a program of the not-for-profit BRIC/Brooklyn Information & Culture, Inc.

Located in Brooklyn Heights, just over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the Gallery is easily accessible by public transportation. It is a short walk from the 2,3; 4,5; M; N or R trains at the Court Street/Borough Hall station; or the A, C trains at High Street.
