THE ROTUNDA GALLERY
EXHIBITION SCHEDULE 2005-2006
September, 2005 (Brooklyn, NY) - The overarching theme of Gallery exhibitions over the coming years will be the identification of trends that repeatedly emerge in times of artistic, political, and economic uncertainty. During these periods, artists tend to re-evaluate their world, seeking ways to articulate ideas that are ephemeral, transitory, or even anxiety-producing. From Mannerism through Rococo, through Dada and beyond Post-Modernism, certain elements of visual expression are repeatedly called into question, characterized by the use of exaggerated forms and a "been there-done that" attitude. Against a backdrop of war, economic and political uncertainties and rapidly escalating technological innovations, today's artists continue to re-examine attitudes towards beauty; analyze styles of communication; and explore the essence of how we perceive stimuli and decipher messages.
Post-Everything
September 8 - October 22, 2005
Curator: Janine Cirincione
The Rotunda Gallery begins our 2005-2006 season with exhibition, entitled Post-Everything. Post-modern, post-apocalyptic, post-minimal, post-war, post-partum, post-colonial, post-feminist, post-credible: all these identifiers imply a state of transition, something breaking loose from its past, pointing to the future, but not yet fully articulated. While Donald Kuspit's recent book, The End of Art, identified the "post-artist" as a maker of contemporary art steeped in irony and despair, we will take a different approach. Post-Everything will present this topic as an exciting phenomenon, giving rise to new hybrid forms of communication.
Time's Arrow-> Twelve Random Thoughts on Beauty
November 17 - December 23, 2005
Curator: Janine Cirincione
This exhibition will debate beauty's relevance and value, taking Umberto Eco's recent book, A History of Beauty, as its inspiration. The book probes beauty's enduring yet dynamically changing value to artists. Perceived as a kind of modernist dividing line in the Duchamp/Matisse standoff, the debate over beauty's relevance and value remains pressing in today's discourse on contemporary art. The exhibition will thematically respond to various historical comments on beauty, presenting a range of works whose incontrovertible elegance, beauty and opulence belie a more serious social, cultural or political agenda.
Emotional Landscape, part of the Lori Ledis Curatorial Initiative
January 19 - March 11, 2006
Guest Curators: Paul Laster and Renee Riccardo
Exploring the visual realms of dreams, recollections, and fantasies, Emotional Landscape presents the work of twelve artists, and artist teams, who understand the psychological power of place. Situating their narratives around forests, deserts, mountains, and seas, these artists create a sense of mystery with representational imagery of a slightly strange sort. Working in collage, drawing, watercolor, painting, sculpture, photography, and video, the featured artists express individual sentiments in unexpected ways. The Rotunda Gallery's Lori Ledis Curatorial Initiative fosters emerging curatorial talent in the field of contemporary art.
Slow Revolution: Coming to an Instant Stop
March 23 - May 13, 2006
Curator: Patrick Grenier
No matter how well we manage our time, there never seems enough of it to do everything we want. In a time of PDAs, just-in-time inventorying and data traveling literally at the speed of light we may wonder if we have lost complete control over the natural rhythms of our lives. When desires for convenience erode our capacity to savor and enjoy, our quality of life has deteriorated. Slow Revolution will present artists whose work decelerates time or privileges idleness. The exhibition will explore how artists depict the passing of time including how duration suggests meaning.
