Contemporary Art Needs You!
Participate in the Rotunda Gallery’s
20th Anniversary Season

The Rotunda Gallery’s 20th anniversary season puts the viewer at center stage. The 2001-2002 exhibitions will stake claim to the viewer’s attention and invite participation with directness and ingenuity. From the fall’s To Market To Market modeled on a traditional art fair when artists will be on hand marketing their wares -- whether products or personas -- and Animas! exploring the spirit which animates objects, to the last exhibition in the spring that presents art that cannot truly exist without the viewer’s presence, the Rotunda Gallery’s exhibition season emphasizes the necessity of our presence, with neither the art nor the viewer taking a passive role in the experience. In keeping with the lively spirit of the season, the Gallery will be hosting several special events and live performances in conjunction with the exhibitions.

To Market To Market plays with the concept of marketing as it relates to the production and display of artwork, using the traditional art fair as a model. Through site-specific installations and live performance pieces, all the artists in this exhibition will display work that in some way adopts a promotional strategy designed to attract the public. The "exhibits" in To Market To Market will include film installations, live music performances, haunted houses on the market and tours of outsider artists. Artists in the exhibition include: Katrin Asbury, Mike Ballou, Julia Chiang, Ian Cooper/Rachel Foullon, Brian Dewan, The E Team and Michael Smith, Shawn Greene, Jeff Hill, A. Clayton Lazar, Christina Mazzalupo, Larry Racciopo, Alex Robbins and Sophie Spar.

To Market To Market, organized by guest curator Robin Kahn, opens on September 13, 2001 with an artists’ reception at 6PM and will be on view through October 27.

The tradition of performing objects has a long history stretching back to ancient performance practices, folk and popular theater, as well as religious ceremony. Taking the tradition of object theater as its starting point, Animas! encompasses drawing, sculpture, masks and puppetry. Animas! will explore the spirit that animates objects and brings them to life, whether in the visual or performing arts. In addition to contemporary artists who use masks and puppet sculpture, the exhibition will include artists whose work concerns the narrative force of anonymous objects. Artists under consideration include Garland Farwell, Matt Freedman, Marina Gutierrrez, Yoko Inoue, Jenna Spevack, Hanne Tierney and Mary Ziegler. In conjunction with the exhibition two evenings of short performances are planned.

Curated by Janet Riker and Meridith McNeal, Animas! will open with an artists’ reception on November 15 and will remain on view through December 29, 2001. (Animas! will be previewed at the Rotunda Gallery’s Fall Benefit, on November 8th. Tickets start at $125; please call for more information)

The Rotunda Gallery will begin the new year with an exhibition organized by one of the curators selected from this year’s open call for curatorial proposals. The Curatorial Initiative aims to attract and support new and emerging curators and provide opportunities for them to realize their vision in a professional arena. Of the five finalists selected for the 01-02 Curatorial Initiative topics cover a wide range of concerns, including the influence of designers Charles and Ray Eames on the visual arts and an exploration of anonymous, generic places. The Gallery’s Artist Advisory Committee will make the final selection for presentation.

This exhibition will open on January 17, 2002 and will be on view through March 9, 2002.

The final exhibition will feature artwork that requires the participation and active interaction of the viewer in order to be fully realized. The work "on view" will engage more than the audience’s gaze. The exhibition will address the question of what art demands of the viewer by inviting them into the experience of the work. Included will be interactive work in a wide range media and aesthetic approaches including participatory events, simple mechanics and computer processes.

Curated by Janet Riker and Meridith McNeal, the exhibition will open on March 28 and will be on view through May 18, 2002.
