About the Video Program

Each year, two programs of BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn, BCAT/Brooklyn Community Access Television, developer and manager of four public access television channels, and BRIC Rotunda Gallery, a contemporary art gallery, sponsor a joint program to make BCAT's Media Center and training programs available to professional Brooklyn-affiliated visual artists.

Through this program, we assist Brooklyn-based artists interested in exploring video and/or multimedia as an artistic medium by making BCAT's state-of-the-art Media Center available to them at no cost. Through its Center for Media Education, we provide training programs and technical assistance in video and digital production and post-production technologies. Our classes consist of the artists selected for our Video Program as well as members of the general public interested in television production, creating a unique mix of interests in the classroom setting.

Description of Facility, Instruction and Services

BCAT's services and programs enable the creation, production, and cablecasting of video and computer-generated, non-commercial programs on BCAT's four cable channels. The BCAT Media Center includes a state-of-the-art studio and studio control area; a training studio; a mini studio designed for use by a single producer serving as talent and technician; edit suites; field camera packages and a Multimedia Lab, outfitted with computer workstations equipped with industry standard software and cutting-edge multimedia applications for video program enhancement. The facility is open Monday–Friday, 10am–10pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm. Lab hours: Monday–Friday, Noon–7pm. Technical support is available during open hours. Hours are subject to change.

Video Program Coursework

Fifteen fellowships are awarded annually. Fellows participate at no cost in BCAT's training program in one of the following areas:

  1. Television Studio Production
An introduction to all aspects of live to tape studio production and the use of equipment, including robotic and manual cameras, camera switching, microphone and audio control, character generator, lighting consoles, set design, and intercom.
  2. Remote/Video Editing Production
This four-week workshop is designed to teach both digital video production and Audio and Video Non-Linear Editing (AVID). This hands-on workshop provides instruction in the process of shooting, lighting, audio, and non-linear editing using digital video to create a completed project.

Training classes are held during day and evening hours and have different start dates. Each workshop consists of two 3-hour sessions per week for a total of 24 hours of instruction. After completion of the training program, fellows are given an allotment of up to 50 hours of lab time to work on projects, in addition to five opportunities to check out field camera equipment overnight. Use of the facility is normally restricted to the creation of programs for BCAT cablecasting. The Video Program course-work takes place between April 1 and December 19, 2009. Lab time must be used within one year after receiving your certification obtained through completion of course-work. Upon request, the artist’s completed projects may be cablecast on BCAT.

An honorarium of $200 will be awarded to each fellow upon completion of program. BCAT's training program fee of $98 will be waived.

This opportunity is open to artists who live or work in the borough of Brooklyn. Individuals working in video, computers, and/or multimedia, or artists who wish to work in these media are eligible to apply. Previous experience in video or multimedia is not required. Applicants with prior experience may apply, but must attend classes in order to use BCAT facilities. There may be opportunity for over qualified fellows to assist during classroom sessions. Note that the purpose of this program is to support artistic production as opposed to marketing or promotional projects. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs and artists who completed the BCAT Video Program in 2007–2008 are not eligible to apply.
